M. W.Penfield-Brookline·2+ weeks agoI've been asked for more background about the Klez Jam, and the musicians - who perished in the Holocaust - who we will be honoring. We will also be premiering a new work from a composer who lives here in Havertown. Here's more information. As some of you may know, I was one of the founding members of the Klezmer Conservatory Band. Many consider the KCB as having been instrumental in reigniting the worldwide interest in Klezmer, Ladino and related traditions by which the ‘people of the book’ have kept their culture alive. https://klezmerconservatory.com/2019/06/20/our-story/ To share the healing power of music during these troubled times, I have begun hosting the Philadelphia Klezmer Jam. More than 150 attended this free event during our last program at the Kaiserman JCC. During our next event, on March 3rd, we will share in the joy and pathos of our rich musical tradition and feature eclectic performances, including Dance Me to the End of Love by Leonard Cohen, which commemorates the sacrifice of the Jewish musicians who were pressed into service at the death camps. This composition will be performed by renowned artist, Phyllis Chapell. Phyllis is just one of 20 guest-artists who will be helping to lead the Jam. https://www.phyllischapell.com/ We will also be premiering En Penumbra Y En Silencio (In Darkness and Silence, we welcome the Sabbath). This selection is from a ‘ musical love story’, Esther de Catacocha, about the Sephardic Jews of 17th century Ecuador, hiding their faith from the Inquisition. The performers will include Kaitlyn and David Brown, professional opera singer and concert violinist.. The composer, Diego Luzuriaga is retired from teaching at Friends Central School. https://www.diegoluzuriaga.com/?lang=en Of course, we’ll also feature lots of dancing and fun for the many children we expect to attend. I encourage participation by musicians of all backgrounds and provide sheet music to make it easy to play along. Last time we even had two young brothers, noodling along respectively, on a tiny Suzuki violin and clarinet. And wonderful snacks. https://www.phillyjcc.com/event/klezmer-jam-2024/ to register for this free event. The maximum seating capacity is 250 people, so please sign-up right away if you hope to attend. And here is a link to the music and lyrics we will be learning. https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1uBX6rDrvqjhrql1g_NupbVSUuyFLkKAo The program will be dedicated to the memory of Dawid (David) Erlich, violin prodigy from Warsaw who performed across Europe until the Nazis invaded Poland. Here he is at age 7 in a concert announcement (just provided to me by the Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C.). He was performing at the Warsaw City Hall. https://polona.pl/item-view/d9b4ec25-d7be-422b-b82a-18ce92aa74b6?page=6 We believe he died in Auschwitz sometime after his 11th birthday (though more research is still needed) Beloved cousin of my mother, Anna. Jewish ‘orchestras’ were also part of the program at Auschwitz to deceive the arriving Jews that this was a possibly hopeful place. I can only pray that in the last moments of his young life, David was hearing the music which he loved.6Like3

M. W.Penfield-Brookline·2+ weeks agoI'd like to invite my neighbors to the free Klezmer Jam event we are hosting on March 3, from 2-4pm at the Kaiserman JCC. This is the fourth in our series, which started at the (amazing) Kelly Center. But we outgrew that great space - 150 people joined my for an afternoon of joy - and pathos - at our last gathering. Hope to see many of you soon - and please bring your instruments. The music and lyrics are available to download in advance. Here's where you can go to RSVP. https://www.phillyjcc.com/event/klezmer-jam-2024/4Like
