LYONSMARY B. (MULLARKEY)Beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother Mary (Mullarkey) Lyons passed away on April 27, 2024, at the age of 92. Mary was born in the idyllic village of Glencullen Lower, Bangor Erris, County Mayo, Ireland to the late Patrick and Bridget (Munnelly) Mullarkey. The second of eight children, she was the first to come to America, traveling on her own as a teenager to settle in Pittsburgh, PA. She met a charming Kerry footballer, the late Jerry Lyons, at a church novena and they were married for more than 50 years. Mary will be dearly missed by her children, Mary Theresa (Randy), Patrick (Maureen), Hannah, Jerry, Jr. (Michele), Noreen, Richard (Regina), and John Lyons; her grandchildren, Renee Malta (Frank), Jennifer Hoffman (Scott), Alena King (Ben), Shannon Lyons, Candice Pulkowski, Alyse Jobse (Jason), Zander Lyons, Jeremiah Lyons, Delaney Lyons, Conor Lyons, and Richie Lyons; and her great-grandchildren, Kaleigh Hoffman, Nico Malta, Allegra King, Giuliana Malta, Lilliana King, Max Jobse, and Shane Jobse. Mary will be fondly remembered by her sister Rose Dervin; her sister-in-law, Eileen Mullarkey; her niece, Maureen Twigg, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. She was predeceased by her brothers, Michael, Sean, Frank, Pat, Seamus, and Oliver. An Irish woman through and through, Mary loved to tell stories while sharing a cup of tea. They were often long, usually funny, and always entertaining. Sometimes she'd crack herself up, breaking into a fit of laughter that made it hard for her to finish. Her storytelling, quick wit, genuine caring, and incredible friendliness meant there were always neighbors stopping to sit on the porch with her or friends popping in. (You may have been her favorite if you brought a treat to satisfy her sweet tooth!) She was such a beloved mother figure to her whole neighborhood that her children's friends not only always asked about her, but also would stop by to see her. Her family meant everything to her. She kept seven kids in line and taught them to be respectful, humble, kind, and grateful. And she made sure they knew they were loved. As an adored Mema, she was always babysitting for one or more of her grandkids, and she let them get away with things she'd never let her kids get away with. She cheered at their school plays, sports, and dance recitals, and she lit up every time they walked through her door. Mary loved her Irish Catholic heritage, and her faith was very important to her. She attended church, prayed, and said the rosary, but more than that, she lived her life as Jesus asked - with integrity, grace, mercy, and love. Family and friends are welcome at the WALTER J. ZALEWSKI FUNERAL HOME, 216 44th Street, Lawrenceville on Thursday, May 2, 2024, from 4-8 p.m. Funeral Mass at St. Jude Parish, St. Raphael Church on Friday, May 3, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital at stjude.org.

<![CDATA[Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Obituaries]]> (21)

SCOTTMARY "KIM" PHILLIPSMary "Kim" Phillips Scott, age 68, of Gibsonia, formerly Franklin Park and Whitehall, passed on April 26, 2024. Born in Pittsburgh, PA on July 11, 1955, daughter of the late John Klacik, Jr. and Antionette Lennick Klacik. Beloved wife of Gary H. Scott. Loving mother of Amy E. Walls (David) and the late Benjamin John Phillips. Dear grandmother of Blake and Makenzie Walls. Sister of Carol Diulus (Peter). Aunt of Dana Greer (Adam) and Jonathan, Step-mother of Ryan Scott (Reshma), Amber Scott-Johnston (Matt), and Sondra Maddich (Brian). Step-grandmother of Vihaan, Shriya, MaKai, and Makena. Sister-in-law of Mark Scott (Julie) and Cindy McConnell (David). Kim was blessed beyond measure when Benjamin John Phillips was placed into her life in 1986. Although Benjamin preceded his mother in death, he was a bright light in the lives of all he knew, and the pride and joy of his parents and family. Kim was blessed once again in 1988 when she welcomed the arrival of Amy Elizabeth, a sweet baby girl who completed her family. Amy's devotion and dedication to her mother's care was admired by many. Kim remarked many times, "Every mother should have a daughter who is a nurse." Amy and her husband, David, blessed Kim in 2018 and again in 2022, with the arrival of Blake Benjamin Walls and Makenzie Marie Walls. Kim's role as their "Kiki" was the joy of her life. Kim's relationship with her sister, Carol, her most treasured confidante, and her brother-in-law, Peter, defined the meaning of sisterhood and family values. Their son, Jonathan, was an inspiration to Kim, and led her to a passion of championing for those with special needs. Carol and Peter's daughter, Dana, followed in her aunt and mother's footsteps in teaching, and was described by Kim as a "second daughter." Kim's role of godmother to her sister's children went above and beyond. She was also looking forward to becoming a great aunt to baby Greer. Never a hair out of place, Kim was the epitome of class, style, and grace. Kim and her husband, Gary, met in high school and remained friends for their entire lives. Upon beginning a relationship, Kim gained a second family she adored, complete with three "bonus" children and four grandchildren. Kim and Gary enjoyed their many adventures together, including many trips to her favorite spot, Hilton Head Island, in the prime of their lives. In addition, many times were spent with dear and loving friends at happy hours, dinners, and on vacations. Kim earned a Master's degree in education from the University of Pittsburgh after graduating from Slippery Rock University. A passionate and devoted schoolteacher, her love of learning and teaching reached far outside of the classroom. Described by her former students as warmhearted, thoughtful, and funny, Kim maintained relationships with those she taught over her years of teaching. Her dedication to education led her to teach at St. Canice, St. Albert the Great, and St. Alexis School until her retirement. Friends will be received Tuesday, April 30th, 3-7 p.m. at SCHELLHAAS & SONS FUNERAL HOME, 1600 Stone Mansion Drive, Sewickley (Franklin Park/Wexford). Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, May 1st at 10:00 a.m. at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church, Triumph of the Holy Cross Parish. Interment will follow at St. John the Baptist Byzantine Catholic Cemetery, Bethel Park. In lieu of flowers, donations to Good Samaritan Hospice, Wexford (Memo - WIPU, 146 Neely School Road, Wexford, PA 15090) or Brother Andre's Café (164 Washington Place, Pittsburgh PA 15219) are appreciated. Kim's legacy of love, kindness, and dedication to her family and community will forever be cherished and remembered.

<![CDATA[Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Obituaries]]> (35)

PEELEJAMES "JIM" EDMUNDOf Point Breeze, died on Monday, April 22, 2024, from complications of Multiple Sclerosis (MS). He was born in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on April 18, 1944. He battled MS for over 20 years, continuously innovating solutions to maintain his independence, which he did maintain until just shy of 80 years of age. Jim was a master craftsman with superb woodworking skills. He could fix almost anything and never seemed to have parts leftover when he took something apart and put it back together. He was a master at catching crabs with just a hand net. He loved to hike, run, and bike. He once rode a rented 10 speed bike from Paris to Pamplona to Bordeaux crossing the Pyrenees mountains twice with all of his gear on his bike. Later, with the help of the Frick Park Lawn Bowling Association, he continued to bowl in his wheelchair for years. Jim was an engineer with a degree from the University of Florida. When his MS forced him to leave the workplace, the health care non-profit Global Links provided him an opportunity to volunteer at their Pittsburgh facility. He volunteered there for many years, repairing medical equipment that then got used to help Global Links' partners. It was so meaningful for Jim to have this opportunity to apply his talent for fixing stuff toward a humanitarian purpose. Jim is survived by his wife of 50 years, Pamela Peele. No funeral or viewing is currently planned. If you would like to honor Jim's long and wonderful life, please consider a donation to Global Links at GlobalLinks.org or by mail at Global Links, 700 Trumbull Drive, Pittsburgh PA 15205. Arrangements by NATURAL FUNERAL COMPANY. Memories and condolences may be left at www.naturalfuneralcompany.com

MIHM SUSAN STRYKERSusan Stryker Mihm died unexpectedly of natural causes in her home on Thursday, April 18, 2024. Susan, known to all as "Susie", was adored and adorable. She delighted her children and grandchildren with her inquisitive mind and fun-loving spirit. Susie remained curious and engaged with life until the very end. Susan Holmes Stryker was born on November 9, 1936 in Pittsburgh, PA to Walter Hayes Stryker and Kathryn Ten Cate Stryker. True to her nature, Susie had a happy and carefree childhood. After graduating from Aspinwall High School, Susie attended Margaret Morrison Carnegie College, the Women's college of Carnegie Tech, now Carnegie Mellon University. There she majored in Textiles and Design and was a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority. Most importantly, at Carnegie Tech, Susie met John McSorley Mihm and thus began a lifelong love and a successful and happy marriage that lasted over 60 years. After college, Susie went to work for The Joseph Horne Company in the Fashion Department. Although her career was short lived, she remained forever interested in clothes and fashion and loved nothing more than to shop with her granddaughters. In 1991, Susie and John purchased a place in Boca Grande, Florida where they spent almost 30 winters playing golf, socializing with friends, and enjoying the beauty and nature of Gasparilla Island. Although she came to sports late in life, Susie was a sports enthusiast. She started with tennis and eagerly transitioned to golf, a game she played with her friends and family until late in her life. Another great sports passion was football. Susie closely followed the Pittsburgh Steelers and rarely missed a game. She loved rehashing Steeler games with her sons and grandchildren. Susie was an avid and discerning reader and a lifelong learner. She religiously read The New Yorker, and The New York Times and always had a new book. She regularly visited her library in Pittsburgh, Boca Grande, and Bedford, NY. She instilled a love of poetry and literature in her children and grandchildren. <![CDATA[Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Obituaries]]> (43)

STARRVIRGINIA "STEINBACH"Age 96, passed away on February 7, 2024. As a young child, Ginny fell in love with art, especially painting. Her interest drew her to study at what is now Carnegie Mellon University. Not long after graduation, she met her husband, Andrew James "Jim" Starr. They settled in Edgewood, PA, and for the next 65-years, could regularly be found playing tennis at the Edgewood Club, playing bridge with lifelong friends, going for scenic walks in Frick Park, worshipping at Beulah Presbyterian Church, and traveling around the world and to their favorite spot in Florida. Ginny was completely devoted to her family, wanting nothing more than for them to experience the same fullness of life that she did. She was always present: offering words of guidance, willing to lend an ear or helping hand in times of trouble, and of course, inviting them to experience the same beauty in creation and in art that she saw. She invited them to every new exhibit at the Frick Art Museum and Carnegie Museum of Art, where she served as a docent for decades. Each year, just before Christmas, she could not wait to show her family the wonderful trees that she and the other docents at Carnegie Museum decorated for the community to enjoy. Ginny was preceded in death by her husband, Jim; her brother, Dr. Lorne Leigh Steinbach of Mt. Lebanon; and her sister, Sylvia Leigh Chauvin of Houma, Louisiana. She is survived by her children, Sarah Bogie (Mike), James B. Starr (Nancy), and Marianne Starr (Walter Wasielak); her grandchildren, Kristin Bogie, Robert Bogie (Michelle), James W. Starr (Brittany), Nicole Starr, Daniel Wasielak, and Alexandra Wasielak; and her three great-granddaughters. Ginny was buried on February 20th, in Homewood Cemetery surrounded by family. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, May 4, 2024, at Grand View Golf Club in Braddock Hills, PA. Friends will be welcomed from 11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m., with a service and lunch to follow for those who would like to stay. Ginny's family is very thankful for the nurses and staff at Providence Point who took good care of her throughout the nine years she was a resident there. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Providence Point Employee Appreciation Fund, checks mailed to 500 Providence Point Boulevard, Pittsburgh, PA 15243; or https://baptistseniorfamily.org/baptist-homes-foundation/choose-your-cause. <![CDATA[Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Obituaries]]> (45)

BACHMAN IIFREDERICK CHRISTIAN Frederick Christian Bachman II, 73, of Somerset. A piece of each of us died with Chris Bachman. Still, in death he gave of himself as he always had, his generosity of spirit and a beautiful heart which we celebrate now as much as we grieve his passing. We benefited from his kindness and compassion. He gave his love and friendship without expectations. Somerset, PA resident Frederick Christian Bachman, passed away at UPMC Somerset Hospital on Thursday, April 18, 2024. Growing up in Edgewood, he was nurtured by his five loving older siblings Pat, Niki, Ted, Merrily, and Suzy. His family and friends were everything to Chris. "He was our brother," commented Paul Ramsdell, a fellow 1969 Edgewood High School graduate. "Whether absent or in person, he gave us strength and inspiration. He could have taken a path of personal ambition, but his existence was simple and graceful." At home in the outdoors, welcoming hard work and tolerating frigid temps, equally comfortable skiing with a CEO and shop-talking with pals, Chris was held in high esteem by all who knew him. Lifelong friend Dallas Frey said, "Chris made sure you were having fun before he even thought about having fun himself. He treasured his Edgewood roots and often recalled high school days, playing football and basketball, or just hanging out." With fondness and admiration of his siblings and their offspring, his parents and extended family, Chris dearly loved those closest to him. Older sister Suzy Ivey: "My dear younger brother showed a very early fascination with heights, so not particularly surprising that he made a career of walking around on them. We six kids, of which he was the youngest, grew up in a big three-story English Tudor house with many windows. When Chris was about four years old, Mother happened to be walking back from chatting with neighbors in the backyard, when she looked up to see him perfectly happy, perched on the roof about two plus stories above the ground. He had found my sister's windows open, crawled along the plant ledge and climbed over to the adjacent roof, where he was contentedly watching nature around him. She ran to the nearest window with a cookie in hand, and when he reached for the cookie, she was able to firmly grasp his wrist and pull him into her loving safe embrace. And the rest, as they say, is history." His niece, Caryl Siems added, "Chris was a true gentleman, and a gentle man. It was always good to be in his presence. He was kind, with a soft smile, twinkling eyes, and warm laugh. I can still hear his laugh. A few turns and twirls around the dance floor with Chris could elevate any party. He was a gift." An independent contractor, Chris enjoyed an industrious career at Hidden Valley Ski Resort in the Laurel Highlands. He loved to ski and to teach. John Cavicchio, a Hidden Valley friend, said, "We've known Chris for more than 35 years and he has remained a dear and loyal friend, not only to our family but to the entire Hidden Valley community. Chris continued to be an honest and hard worker who was ready to help one and all. We will miss him dearly." About her close friend and neighbor, Andrea Beats noted, "He was a simple man...generous, humble, and good, lighthearted, and sentimental. He cared little about even the ordinary possessions most people require." Having recently lost her precious dog Walter whom Chris adored, Andrea observed, "I like to imagine them playing together now." Every man was admiring of Chris' kindness and strength, and envious of his 32-inch waistline. His skillful hands were rough and worn, his manners were polished and respectful. Despite his legions of admirers, he was thoroughly unpretentious and wholly unassuming. It was noted by his high school sweetheart Linda Dunn that every young woman's father, given the choice, would name Chris perfect son-in-law material. Starting his career at Dunn & Campbell: "My dad loved Chris like a son," Linda commented, "and he has been the great love of my life. We met our junior year at Edgewood High. We lost touch for many years but were able to reconnect and become wonderful friends again," she said. "I hold dear so many memories of being together in classes, driver's ed, going on dates, and dances at the Club. How proud I felt when attending his basketball and football games, watching Chris and knowing that I was his girlfriend. My heart would burst with pride. Chris was unaware of how handsome and kind-hearted he was, and how much everyone loved him. He will be so unbelievably missed, but he will be my angel forever. I love you, my Chris." Grieving Mr. Bachman's passing are his many friends and surviving family members who suggest gestures of sympathy be made as charitable donations to The Mel Douglass Fund, which awards college scholarships to Edgewood students for their community service. Checks should be made out to The Mel Douglass Fund, and sent in care of Dallas Frey, 193 West Hutchison Avenue, Edgewood, PA 15218. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, May 11 from 11:30am to 2:30pm at the Edgewood Club, 1 Pennwood Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15218. <![CDATA[Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Obituaries]]> (47)

SZABOSTEPHEN JOSEPHStephen Szabo, 82, passed away peacefully on April 24, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. He was born December 31, 1941, in Mt. Pleasant, PA, to Margaret and Stephen Szabo. Stephen's early life was humble and austere. He lost his father in a coal mining accident when he was three years old. As a young boy, he worked odd jobs to help support the family. His mother later remarried James Hazy, who became a loving father to Stephen and his sister. Stephen's boyhood dream was to become a pilot. However, at age 16, he was badly wounded in a near fatal airplane crash causing him to be hospitalized for almost a year. Shortly after his recovery, he redirected his goals attending cosmetology school to become a hairdresser. In 1960, he opened his first hair salon in Mt. Lebanon. He possessed a strong sense of service, engaged in lifelong learning, and genuinely cared for each of his clients. He had the ability to make each person feel that they were the most important. With this passion, that small salon led to a network of connections throughout the global hairdressing community. Professionally, Stephen's mission was developing and educating hairdressers. Even after a 60-year career, Stephen still loved talking about hairdressing techniques and attending classes. Stephen was an eternally positive thinker, always looking forward and believed in delaying gratification to be better. He taught his children and grandchildren the same motto that he lived by "be thy labor big or small, do it well or not at all". Stephen had a full and active life enjoying boating, skiing, traveling, entertaining and learning. When not working, he was solely devoted to his family. Stephen and Bernadette's lifelong partnership was the cornerstone of all aspects of their lives. He was most proud of his children and grandchildren and loved his German shepherd, Flora. He will be remembered for his smile, joy of life, style, generosity, and kindness. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. He is survived his wife of 61 years, Bernadette; by his children, Suzanne (Diana), SJ (Brenda) and Josh (Katherine); grandchildren, Eli, Linsey and Emily; as well as his sister, Barbara Bilohlavek; and nieces and nephews. A visitation will be held Sunday, April 28, 2024, at BEINHAUER FUNERAL HOME in Peters Township from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. A blessing service will be held there Monday at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to the Washington City Mission, www.citymission.org, 84 W. Wheeling St., Washington, PA 15301. This charity was close to Stephen's heart as he donated generously, including providing free haircuts for shelter residents.

<![CDATA[Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Obituaries]]> (48)

BAKERWILLIAM E. William, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, veteran, teacher and active volunteer in his community, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 25 at the age of 94. He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, wisdom, wit and cherished memories that will forever be treasured by those who knew him. Born on July 2, 1929 in Paris, Tennessee, William lived a life filled with service, adventure, laughter, and deep connections. In 1937 he made his way to Pittsburgh where he later attended the Stowe school district and in the fifth grade, he met his beloved wife, Theresa. They remained childhood sweethearts through school and were later married in England in 1949. Together they celebrated 69 years of marriage before Theresa passed away in 2019. In his youth, William served his country with honor and dedication, bravely volunteering to defend the freedoms we hold dear. He joined the Navy in 1948 and auditioned at the Naval Academy for the Admiral's Band as a drummer. He was selected and assigned to the U.S.S. Columbus, traveling to more than 28 countries throughout Europe until he was honorably discharged in 1952. His commitment to service extended beyond his military years, as he continued to support and uplift those around him as a musician. He played in the Pittsburgh Symphony, the West Hills Symphony, the Lamplighter Orchestra and a jazz band throughout Western PA for more than 30 years. He also taught rudimental drumming to Moon, Montour, Stowe, Coraopolis and Quaker Valley students as a private drum instructor. Professionally he was a research chemist for Merck (Pittsburgh Activated Carbon) for 40 years. Upon retirement he became involved as a charter captain on Lake Erie and he won numerous citation fishing awards. He and Theresa also lived part-time in Florida where he volunteered as a river boat captain for manatee tours for close to 25 years. It was in Florida that he began taking woodworking classes. He then later joined the Oglebay Woodcarvers Guild and became an instructor. He and Theresa worked as a team of artisans sketching, carving and painting his work. In his free time, he pursued his passions with vigor. Whether it was fishing, woodcarving or tending to his garden, or sharing his love of music with others, he approached each day with a sense of joy and gratitude. William will be deeply missed by his loving family, including his son Bill Baker and daughter-in-law Mary Ann Baker; and daughter, Beth Zappa and son-in-law Michael Zappa, his grandchildren Stephanie (Matt) Straub, Shannon (Mark) Meyer, Shelby (Matt) Fiori, Christopher (Lauren) Zappa and Ainsely (Jim) Murphy, his 10 great-grandchildren and a wide circle of friends. Though he may be gone, his spirit will live on in the countless lives he touched and the memories he created. Mass of Christian burial will take place on Tuesday, April 30, 2024 at 10 am, at Archangel Gabriel Parish (Holy Trinity Church), 5718 Steubenville Pike, Robinson Township, PA 15136. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Oglebay Woodcarvers Guild, 1330 National Road, Wheeling, WV 26003-5706 or the American Legion Post 618, 701 Yunker Street, McKees Rocks, PA 15136 in his memory. Rest in peace Pap. Your kindness, strength, and love will forever remain in our hearts.
